Tips to Combat Spring Lethargy

Simple and Natural Ways to Kick-Start into Spring

The pleasant anticipation of the first rays of sun quickly subsides, we feel lethargic, irritable, weary and find it hard to concentrate. An estimated 50 to70 percent of people feel the strain during the transition from winter to spring. Here, you can find out about simple and natural tricks to kick-start your body into spring.

Stock up on Sunshine with a Short Walk

By the time the cold winter season is finally drawing to a close, the body is running low on energy reserves. The limited hours of sunshine mean we have used up almost all of the “happiness” hormone Serotonin and the “sleep hormone” Melatonin is given free reign. Sunlight is the best way to increase Serotonin levels. So make the most of those first rays of sun and go for a walk. Increased oxygen supplies also improve the supply of nutrients to cells.

Food for the Brain - Spring Begins in the Mind

A healthy and balanced diet helps increase concentration levels. Only when the brain is supplied with the optimal amounts of nutrients can it perform at its best. Several small meals and light dishes are the key to success. Eat the right meats, the right fats and the right carbohydrates and avoid sugar.

  • Whole-grain products are food for the nerves, as they contain vitamins B5 and B6. So replace white flour products with whole-grain products. Bananas, nuts and leafy green vegetables contain magnesium, which calms the nerves.
  • White sugar is also easy to avoid. Replace sweets with fruit and vegetable smoothies.
  • Eat fish as part of your regular diet, preferably three times a week. It’s easy to digest and contains lots of valuable fatty acids.
  • Drink lots – preferably tea.

A Warm Bath, a Cold Shower and Lots of Sleep

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t enjoy a nice warm bath in the evening. It aids relaxation and high-quality essential oils can have a positive influence on the mood. Make sure you get enough sleep – sleep is essential for both mind and body. Alternating between hot and cold water in the shower helps kick-start your circulation. If you find this difficult, you can always run your legs under cold water briefly just before drying.
